<description>I am WOEFULLY late in wishing Dascha her first American Happy Birthday. Apologies! As a friend of Mama Rose, I've been following the children's progress for quite some time, and have been rejoicing in their journey.
I will be sending Mama Rose a package soon that will include small gifts of the heart for both Nikolai and Dascha. May all your birthdays be happy ones!
(PS - Jay, the way you relay her words, complete with accent, make your reports so alive for me, and always make me smile.)

<description>Happy Belated Birthday Dascha! What a beautiful little girl you are. It is so nice to see you smiling on your first birthday in your very own home. Your special parents waited and waited for you and your brother. Now you're home you'll never have to fear another birthday. Nie Boilse Dascha.

<description>She had a really great birthday yesterday.

It occurred to me today that at the baby house, the 4th birthday was a very ominous one as any child not adopted by age 4 would be transferred to an orphanage.

Very few children get adopted once in an orphanage and he care is not as good -- so the children have a sense that leaving the baby house w/out parents is not a good thing.

I am thinking that when we said it was her 4th birthday she may have remembered that that was the time other kids were sent away w/out parents and must have been afraid that that was what we were going to do.

She was very happy all day -- and she got increasingly so throughout the day -- in fact by the end, I think she was at the point where she wished every day was her birthday.</description>

<description>Her transformations always amaze me. The jump from her terror to that smiling face is enormous. What have this children been through? My birthday wish for her is to throughly forget her babyhood and be, inside and out, that smiling person in her first birthday celebration photo.
love
